As Oprah Winfrey has said, “a mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope that’s inside you.”
Like many of us, Dana Perino has been blessed to have such people in her life. She grew up in Wyoming and Colorado. Then, in a series of events that were nothing short of serendipity (if not destiny), she wound up in Washington, D.C. As she has said, she was basically a cowgirl who went east.
Her professional ascent was beyond anything she had imagined. She became White House press secretary and served more than seven years in the administration of President George W. Bush. Since 2009, she’s been with FOX News Channel. In addition to a morning news show, she’s co-host of “The Five,” the most watched show in all of cable news.
With many stories, Dana talks about the wise counsel she’s received from dozens of influencers in her life, beginning with her father who (when she was in the third grade) assigned her to read two newspapers every day and select two article to discuss before dinner. Her mentors since then have included dozens of friends and colleagues, including a President of the United States.
Let fear ride in the passenger seat. Despite self-doubt that can affect anyone, forge ahead to chase your dreams.
Formal mentoring relationships are not necessary. Thanks to modern technology, the possibilities are endless for finding helpful advice.
Today is a great time to be a curious human.
Look around you. What resources are available to help you navigate your life?
If imposter syndrome is sneaking up on you, consider Dana’s advice on how to forge ahead and build confidence in yourself.
Ask yourself, “What can I do today—and every day—to learn from people whose example I trust?”
