Ep 16: Sabina Nawaz – Why being boss isn’t always easy, but how you can thrive

Whether you’re a boss now or hope to be in the future, Sabina Nawaz can help. Executive coach to thousands of business leaders—including Bill Gates and others whose names you would recognize—Sabina answers many of the questions you should be asking:

  • What are the make-a-difference factors between managers who become superstars and those who crash and burn?

  • Why does getting promoted present one of the riskiest times in your career?

  • How can you avoid the burnout trap?

  • How can creating a “Yes List” help you succeed as a manager?

  • How can the “Shut-up” exercise help you succeed in a leadership role?

If you’ve been very strategic in your previous position and carry that tendency into your new job as manager, you may be regarded as manipulative. So, in a different situation your strengths might be perceived as problematic. A helpful exercise is to write down some of your superpowers. Then do your best to honestly look at those from the perspective of someone three levels down. From a different vantage point, those “superpowers” may come across in ways you don’t intend.

  • For some people, the riskiest times in their career are when they get promoted.

  • Sometimes a strength can morph into a weakness. For example, attention to detail can come across as micromanaging.

  • When faced with unprecedented amounts of pressure, it’s sometimes best to do nothing. Literally nothing.

  1. What can you do to identify and deal with the blinds spots you have about your blind spots?

  2. What are some specific work and personal management habits you can form to help you avoid burnout?

  3. What can you do to reset your mind while amping up your creativity??
